Four Ontario Cup Champions Crowned

VAUGHAN, July 23, 2014 – The Ontario Cup has four new champions that were crowned this past weekend in the Under 18 Boys and Girls and Under 21 Men’s and Women’s divisions.  The Finals took place on Sunday at Civic Stadium in Oshawa, where large crowds came out to support our Finalists.

Detailed accounts of each of the four Finals are below:

Under 18 Girls - London Nor’West vs. Oshawa Kicks Red Devils

In the first Final of the day, London Nor’West took on the Oshawa Kicks Red Devils in the Under 18 Girls division.  Civic Stadium was buzzing with fans as the Oshawa faithful came out in large numbers to support their girls.  While the atmosphere heavily favoured the Oshawa side, it was London that came out firing to stifle any home-field advantage with a goal in the 9th minute to go up 1-0.  As the first half progressed, Oshawa would settle in and create some chances of its own, but would go into halftime down by a goal.  London ramped up the intensity in the second half and was able to double its lead in the 51st minute.  London would then put the game out of reach by adding a third goal in the 59th minute, securing a 3-0 victory over Oshawa.  The goal scorers for London are:  Shae-Lynn Van Gassen (2) and Elise DeDecker.

Under 18 Boys – Pickering Power Green 96B vs. Bolton Wanderers

The second Final of the day featured the Under 18 Boys division with the Pickering Power Green 96B taking on the Bolton Wanderers.  This game was very intense from the opening whistle, as both sides looked to gain an edge early.  While both sides exchanged chances, it would be Bolton who would strike first in the 23rd minute of play.  Bolton would then add a second goal just five minutes later to double its lead.  Desperate to stay in the game, Pickering would battle back and come up with a goal in the 37th minute, going into the halftime break down 2-1.  Pickering picked up the pace in the second half in hopes of equalizing, but Bolton would hold strong and add an insurance goal in the 69th minute.  Despite several chances to get back into the game by Pickering, Bolton would hold on for the 3-1 victory.  The goal scorers for Bolton are: Michal Misiak, Julian Mullin, and Jamar Redhead.  The goal scorer for Pickering is: Michael Jahshan

Under 21 Women – Ajax FC Red vs. Burlington Bayhawks

The Under 21 Women’s final featured Ajax FC Red and the Burlington Bayhawks. The match itself was a bit of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for the Burlington squad. A Burlington own goal in the 4th minute of the match put Ajax on the board early, as Burlington got caught defending a corner kick taken by Ajax #7 Jessica Craig. Shortly after, the Burlington keeper lost track of a shot, which #6 Tiffany Smith for Ajax capitalised on, making the lead 2-0. The Burlington team, appearing unsteady and unsure, started to turn things around near the end of the second half. Burlington scored their first goal of the game, in the 41st minute by #7 Stacey Mackenzie, and #66 Chanel Vani scored the equalizer in the 45th minute.

Burlington came into the second half a completely different team. Confident passes and well placed balls meant goals were quick to follow. Early in the second half, at the 47th minute, Burlington #4 Angela Cutaia scored, giving Burlington a 3-2 lead. In the 64th minute, Burlington #12 Danielle LaFrance scored an insurance goal, giving Burlington a comfortable lead. The final score was Burlington 4 – 2 over Ajax.

Under 21 Men – Vaughan Azzurri vs. Scarborough City

The Under 21 Men’s final placed the Vaughan Azzurri against Scarborough City. The teams were well matched in this Ontario Cup Final, making this a hard fought battle. Very early in the game, one got the feeling that whichever team scored first would be the winner in the end. The first half finished scoreless in a battle of missed opportunities. The teams regrouped at halftime and persevered for the go-ahead goal. Vaughan would break the stalemate, with #5 Owen Pearce scoring in the 47th minute. A tight match from beginning to end, and no more goals to be had, the final score was 1-0 Vaughan over Scarborough City.
